Recent Incidents

RVFD stations continue to be among the busiest in the county. Recent incidents to which RVFD units responded include: Serious collision in Chevy Chase While returning from another incident early Sunday morning February 5, 2012, RVFD Rescue Squad 703 was dispatched to assist on a serious collision on East-West Hwy in Chevy Chase. Crews from Bethesda-Chevy Chase Rescue Squad, Chevy Chase FD and Bethesda FD had responded to a collision between a county Ride-On bus and a car. The driver of the car was seriously pinned in the vehicle and the bus was up an embankment and on top of a telephone pole. RS703's crew helped stabilize the bus so it would not move and endanger the rescue scene and then assisted with extricating the car's driver.

House Fire in Derwood February 7, 2012 - RVFD and MCFRS units responded to a fire in a house on Derwood St.

February 12, 2012 - Collision on Rockville Pike. Station 3 and 23 units responded to a collision at Rockville Pike and First St. RS703's crew removed the driver's side door to extricate a patient from one vehicle. The T-bone collision resulted in injuries to four occupants in two vehicles.

RVFD Chief on Fire Engineering Talkradio

RVFD Chief Scott Emmons recently participated in an on-line talkradio discussion on the Fire Engineering web site. Chief Emmons discussed successfully staffing a volunteer fire department in a combination service and how RVFD accomplishes this using volunteer night shifts, live-in members and career personnel. Rollover on I270

October 9, 2011 - RVFD and other MCFRS units were dispatched at 3:17a for a reported collision with rollover on southbound Interstate 270 south of Montrose Rd. First arriving units reported a small pickup truck on it's roof. RS703 then reported two victims trapped in the truck. Chief 703C assumed command and requested an additional unit for manpower. With the assistance other crews, the crew of RS703 first stabilized the overturned truck and then, using high pressure airbags, raised the truck about six inches off the ground to release pressure on the roof and allow space to remove the driver's and passenger's doors. Once the doors were removed, the two victims were removed from the vehicle and transported to the local trauma center. A victim in another vehicle involved in the crash was also transported. Units responding: E723, RS703, AT723, M723, M741, A726 (BCC Rescue Squad), E726 and Chief 703C (command).

Collision on Rockville Pike

September 25, 2011 - Units from RVFD Stations 23 and 3 responded to an auto collision in the 1200 block of Rockville Pike. Upon arrival, RS703 reported one trapped in the vehicle. The driver apparently lost control of his vehicle, sideswiped another vehicle and then rolled over several times. While the crew from A723 stabilized the trapped victim, the crew from RS703 used hydraulic rescue tools to remove both doors from the passenger side of the vehicle to free the trapped victim. M723 transported the victim to a local trauma center.
