Building for the Future
RVFD is beginning a capital campaign to raise $5 million to completely renovate Station 3 at 380 Hungerford Drive. Station 3 is the flagship station of the Rockville Volunteer Fire Department. Known to RVFD members as “The Rock” or “The Big House,” it was designed in 1965 primarily to accommodate volunteers who responded from home (home response), with a small bunkroom for members who wanted to stay the night and be on the first piece of apparatus out the door. As Rockville grew, home response became less practical due to increased traffic, delays in reaching the station in an emergency, and increasing housing costs. Now most of Station 3's apparatus is staffed with in-station personnel.
Located in downtown Rockville, Station 3 apparatus responds to over 10,000 calls per year and is the hub of a network which also includes Station 23 on Rollins Avenue, Station 31 on Darnestown Road, and Station 33 on Falls Road. The large first-due response area covers business, commercial, and light industrial areas, as well as a large residential portion.
Station 3 units are first due to Rockville's newest developments — the King Farm and Falls Grove communities. Health care facilities located in our first due include Shady Grove Hospital, nursing homes, and assisted living facilities.
As Rockville has grown, the station has simply run out of space to accommodate the volunteers and career personnel who respond to your calls and to provide administrative and operational functions for the four Rockville stations. Accordingly, the Department has initiated a capital campaign to raise $5 million to provide much needed improvements to our station:
Planned Improvements - Click here to view plans of new Station 3
- Renovate the bunkroom to accommodate the number of members who spend the night
- Improve facilities for the 40% of our members who are women
- Enlarge living quarters for the personnel, many of whom spend an average of 60 hours per month at the station
- Add space for storage and offices and to make eating, studying and meeting more comfortable
- Provide offices and administrative space for administering the four Rockville stations
- Enlarge our meeting room to accommodate community events
